Brevard County, known as Florida's "Space Coast", not only has had a part in leading advancements in surfboard materials but has produced a large number of top ASP surfers, and top-notch Surfboard Shapers. Since the early years of surfing in Florida, many shapers had to get their influences from other areas. Many surfers would venture out to Hawaii, Cali, Europe, and all around the world. Thus, in turn, bringing ideas and designs back with them. The area eventually became a hot bed for shapers and as a result, surfboard foam mogul Clark Foam eventually opened a warehouse in the 70's to supply the demand for polyurethane blanks. It was around the early 80's or so that respected shaper and surfer Greg Loher began experimenting with epoxy resins with much criticism from the industry. Come the close of Clark Foam, now almost every surfboard manufacturer makes use of epoxy resin, some exclusively. With top ASP surfers like Kelly Slater, Matt Kechele, the Hobgood Brothers, Charlie Kuhn, Todd Holland, Danny Melhado and Brian Hewitson, Brevard County is a force to be reckoned with.
