Top contenders Julian Wilson, John John Florence, Jordy Smith and Jack Freestone are all out of the mix. Making way for injection of wildcard talent from across the globe as well as local talent. Wildcards include; Indonesia’s Rio Waida, Peru’s Lucca Mesinas, Mexico’s Johny Corzo and Diego Cadena, and Brazil’s Matheus Herdy.

The dreamy sand bottom point of Mexicos, Barra de la Cruz has starred in many great surf films. The wave itself couldn't be more ideal with long barrels and an inside close out air section. It's surging power has been known to take some surfers by surprise so if the conditions align we are in for some excellent viewing.

The big question remains, who will win the 2021 Corona Open Mexico? We’ve listed our Boardcave staff picks below for this years competition. Click through the carousel to see what gear these athletes are riding to perform their best in dreamy Mexican conditions.
